Response to Unlawful Stop-Work Order on Revolution Wind Project
RE: Opposition to Unlawful Stop-Work Order on Revolution Wind Project
The Trump Administration's decision to halt construction on the Revolution Wind project represents a dangerous assault on America's energy security, economic competitiveness, and environmental future. This dramatic action further erodes investor confidence in the U.S. market across all industries and undermines progress on shared national priorities while jeopardizing thousands of jobs and billions in investments. As with the stop-work order that was issued (and subsequently lifted) for the Empire Wind project in April, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has failed to provide any reasoning behind their decision, other than concerns related to "national security."
The Facts Speak for Themselves: Revolution Wind is 80% complete with all offshore foundations and 45 of 65 turbines installed, representing years of rigorous federal and state hearings, reviews, and permit approvals under the previous Administration as well as during President Trump's first term. To halt construction at this critical juncture is not just economically destructive—it's legally questionable and reeks of fossil fuel influence.
The Human Cost: This stop-work order directly threatens the livelihoods of hundreds of American construction workers who have already contributed 2 million labor union hours to this project. Any pause or uncertainty at this stage could ripple across jobs, contracts, and communities already benefiting from the project.
Economic Sabotage: The Administration's actions send a chilling message to global partners: America is no longer a reliable partner for long-term energy investment. The uncertainty around Empire Wind's stop-work order cost Equinor nearly $1 billion in write-downs, demonstrating the real financial damage of political interference in duly permitted projects.
Energy Security and Reliability Undermined: Today, the U.S. has only one fully operational large-scale offshore wind project producing power. That is not enough to meet America's rising energy needs. Revolution Wind will power over 350,000 homes across Rhode Island and Connecticut, helping meet growing energy demand with clean, reliable power. South Fork Wind, which is adjacent to Revolution Wind and uses the same turbine technology, has been delivering clean power to New York at an astounding 92% capacity.
Moving Forward: Industry analysts have said that limiting renewable energy development amid rising electricity demand threatens to drive up power prices across the country, making it harder for the senior demographic and lower- moderate income families to heat their homes. We cannot allow extremist ideology to derail sound energy policy that benefits American families and workers.
Renewable Energy Long Island stands with Ørsted, the offshore wind industry, union workers, communities, and families in demanding the immediate reversal of this unlawful order. We call on Congress, state leaders, and industry stakeholders to unite against this reckless politicization of America's energy future.
