Standing Up for Offshore Wind

On Earth Day, our Executive Director Melissa Parrott joined fellow organizations such as: Citizens Campaign for the Environment, New York League of Conservation Voters, Climate Jobs NY, Long Island Progressive Coalition, All of Our Energy, S4CA, and local union groups at an offshore wind rally to call for bold climate action and clean energy solutions.

She emphasized the critical importance of the Empire Wind 1 project and the urgent need for offshore wind on Long Island. With a federal pause threatening progress, now is the time to raise our voices.

Offshore wind is essential to protecting our communities, creating local jobs, and building a sustainable future—and we need it now. Let’s keep pushing for a just transition that puts people and our planet first!

About Empire Wind 1:

Empire Wind 1 is a groundbreaking offshore wind project that will bring clean, renewable energy to New York, helping the state meet its bold climate goals. Located about 15–30 miles off the southern coast of Long Island, Empire Wind 1 is expected to generate 810 megawatts of electricity—enough to power over 500,000 homes.

Developed by Equinor, this project is part of New York’s larger push to transition to clean energy, reduce carbon emissions, and create good-paying, local union jobs. Empire Wind 1 will also support new port infrastructure, including the transformation of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal into a major hub for offshore wind staging and operations.

At a time when climate change demands urgent action, Empire Wind 1 is a critical step toward a healthier, more resilient future for New Yorkers—and a just transition for communities on the frontlines of the energy transition.
