Saving More Than Energy: The Beauty of Recycled Building MaterialsJessica James' Montauk home was built with green principles in mind. Nothing was wasted during site excavation (including stones that became the frame for a fireplace and garden stone wall), reclaimed materials were used (doors and kitchen cabinets from childhood home), and the home was designed with efficiency in mind including features such as radiant heat, structurally insulated panels, recycled denim insulation. The icing on this green cake is the 5.3kW solar electric system that provides Jessica's electricity.
Solar from Roof to Basement: The Home That Runs 100% on SolarMark describes himself as an alternative energy "geek" who likes to try out the newest, greenest technologies available. This is likely why his home is powered 100% by renewable energy (he has 4 types of solar panels on his roof!) and he has a minimal $5 (the service connection fee) electric bill per month! Learn about Mark's "solar powered clothes dryer" and all his other green tricks of the trade.
Mini But Mighty: Green Things Come In Small PackagesCampbell Dalglish decided to build a green home and presented his architect with seven challenges: make the home energy efficient, environmentally friendly, sustainable, a healthy home, small but spacious, have mass appeal, and be affordable. Was he able to achieve all of these goals? See for yourself!
Grown on Long Island: Mixing Wine and Wind on the North ForkRussell McCall decided to power his vineyard with green, clean energy to power the vineyard tasting room and irrigation equipment. He looks at the wind turbine blades spinning in the breeze and smiles, knowing that he's made not only a sound business investment, but also a decision that's helping the land from which he farms.
