Frequently Asked Questions:

Does someone have to be there the whole time?
Yes. For security reasons, we do not want to alert people that your home or business will be unattended. Also, having someone available to speak to visitors and answer questions adds to the experience.

How many people will come to visit my home or building?
Due to the nature of the event, there is no way for us to determine how many visitors will actually be coming to each tour location. There are some things you can do to increase your number of visitors, however: let people know you'll be participating in the tour, hang up fliers in your area, encourage neighbors with solar to participate in the tour (a cluster of tour sites tend to receive more visitors then a single site far away from others), put your lawn sign out the Sunday before the tour so that it will get the maximum exposure, etc. Last year tour sites received anywhere from 1 to 20 visitors. This year we want the tour to be bigger and better. With you helping to spread the word, we can achieve that.

Do visitors need to come inside?
That depends on your preference and the type of solar energy system you are showcasing (i.e. if the components are indoors, guests may want to come inside to see them). Last year, many solar electric system owners just set up a table outside for handouts with chairs to sit down and talk.

Do I have to be an expert on every aspect of my home or building?
No. You will probably get some questions that are difficult to answer, which is inevitable but should not be a concern. Any questions you cannot answer can be referred to RELI.

How do I add my home or business to the tour?
Fill out a simple online form at http://www.renewableenergylongisland.org/tourhosts.cfm

What happens after I submit my home or business as a tour location?
A basic profile of your site is automatically generated based on the information you provide and is included in our online tour listing for potential visitors to see (once they have obtained a free Visitors Pass). You will then receive an email confirmation and other ongoing communication from us. The week of the event, you will receive a kit in the mail containing everything you should need for the tour day.
