Bio: Gregory M. Matzat, P.E.
Greg Matzat is a Senior Advisor at the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, commonly known as NYSERDA. NYSERDA promotes energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources in New York with the aim to improve the environment, accelerate economic growth, and reduce customer energy bills.
Greg’s focus at NYSERDA is the deployment of offshore wind to satisfy the New York’s renewable and environmental goals. Greg is the lead at NYSERDA in creating the New York State Offshore Wind Master Plan, a comprehensive strategy for responsibly developing the state’s offshore wind resources.
Prior to joining NYSERDA, Greg was the Senior Advisor for Offshore Wind Technologies at the U.S. Department of Energy for 5 years. At the Department of Energy, Greg was the lead for the Department’s offshore wind research, development and demonstration activities. He was involved in the design, permitting, environmental and financial aspects of the Department's offshore wind demonstration projects.
Before joining the Department of Energy, Greg was President and CEO of the naval architecture and engineering firm Sparkman & Stephens in New York City where he worked for 20 years and managed the design, engineering and construction of over 100 vessels constructed in shipyards around the world.
Greg holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Webb Institute and a Master’s in Ocean Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in New York.
