FAQs

1.       What is LI-CAN?

a.       Long Island Climate Action Network is a grassroots campaign to reduce the threat of global warming through individual and community-wide action.

2.       What is a LAN?

a.       A Local Action Network (LAN) is a local group of individuals who work together to lower their own individual and household carbon footprint. Each LAN will also work together as a team to impact the community in some way through reducing greenhouse gas emissions (i.e. working with the school board to improve recycling, becoming involved in town government to pass new legislation to lower the town’s carbon footprint).

3.       How are LANs organized and what will I learn and do?

a.       A LAN organizer leads each of six meetings following the work book "Low Carbon Diet" by David Gershon. This  30 Day Program to Lose 5000 Pounds  is a fun, accessible, step-by-step guide to dramatically reduce your greenhouse gas output in just a month’s time.

b.      You'll learn how to calculate your CO2 footprint and how to reduce your annual household CO2 output by at least 15 percent.

4.       How can I become involved?

a.       You can sign up as a LI-CAN volunteer.  We are now seeking volunteers to 1) educate the community about global warming and solutions to reduce greenhouse gases and 2) organizers to help individuals lower their own and their community’s carbon footprints.

5.       What do educators do?

a.       Educators will give a 40 minute presentation to a variety of audiences. Each educator will be required to schedule and lead a minimum of six presentations. This commitment lasts for at least one year.

6.       What do organizers do?

a.       Organizers will be required to recruit, organize, and lead at least one Local Action Network following Gershon’s plan in the “Low Carbon Diet.” LANs will be required to meet at least six times and Organizers will be charged with helping each individual involved in the LAN reduce their own carbon footprint by 5000 pounds.

7.        Do I have to do anything to become involved?

a.       Yes. We are requiring each individual (organizers AND educators) to reduce their own carbon footprint by 5000 pounds). There are easy to follow step-by-step guidelines in Gershon’s book.

8.       How will Educators and Organizers be trained?

a.       The LI-CAN Core Leaders will be holding a day-long training workshop to train both Educators and Organizers in how to give presentations and motivate others to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

9.       Do I have to pay for the cost of the workshop?

a.       No.  Thanks to a generous grant from the Rauch Foundation and the New Tudor Foundation, we are able to offer the workshop free of charge at this time.

10.   When is this training workshop?

a.       The training workshop is being held on Sunday, May 18, 2008 from 10am-5:30pm at Molloy College in Farmingdale (at Republic Airport).  See http://www.renewableenergylongisland.org/calendar.cfm?calendarID=198&month=5

11.   I want to be involved with LI-CAN but cannot attend the training workshop. Is there anything else I can do?

a.       Yes. We are planning a second workshop approximately a month after the first workshop. Check back to our website frequently for updates.

b.      You can also join a one of our Local Action Network (LAN) groups in your neighborhood once they have been established.  Make sure to sign up with your e-mail address and ZIP code at http://www.renewableenergylongisland.org/li-can.cfm so that we can notify you of new LANs.
